My friend just bought a Super Hang On, and there's no bikes or roadside objects on the screen. So far all of the controls and such seem to be working, but the force feedback isn't working either. Most of my fixes have been cap kit fixes but this one looks like something else. Any idea what's wrong with it? Bad rom chip, maybe?
There isn't force feedback it has a vibrating motor that goes with the engine Rpms, it isn't like outrun.

You should go into the service menu and do a ROM and RAM check.

The ladders look very confusing, you can't walk through the ladder and onto it. You have to walk right round which is weird
You can only get on and of ladders all the ends not in the middle. It makes the game way more interesting.

John is right, don't let Ian discourage you!  I have a DK cabaret that also had the 4 board stack and didn't work.  I got it working.  Also, I have a DK upright and a Junior upright and they have 2 board stacks in them and they both have the individual connectors in them and not the edge connector, so you might be able to test your board in that upright.  If not some people sell adapters, I have one.

I picked up a SI cocktail that had a Big Kong conversion in it. The cabinet had obviously been in a fire, and didn't work, but I got it working after washing the soot off the board and replacing a missing cap.

Progress of me working it through and getting the game working:

Here is the harness adapter too:

Here you can see my upright with a 2 board stack yet the harness is one that is compatible with a 4 board stack:

And my Junior with the older style harness as well:

I've always felt that I don't want to get involved with boot leg stuff but that one is just cool enough that if I found one I'd at least consider buying it.
Thanks! The kit runs on Galaxian hardware and in my case was installed on SI part 2 conversion bootleg Galaxian. Does that make sense?

The bootleg DK was installed in a SI2 cocktail that was first converted to Galaxian with a special bootleg board they plugs into a SI2 harness and later the bootleg board was converted to a DK bootleg with a kit that was intended for actual Galaxian hardware.

Good thing it was compatible.

I had a Galaga '88. Got boring fast.
Did you beat it? what level did you warp to? if you are bored with 88 you will find that regular Galaga isn't more exciting.

I grew up playing Galaga. It's not foreign territory to me.
I wasn't questioning that you had ever played the game.

Galaga 88 is Galaga but with more, so how could 88 get boring? it confuses me that you would think that.

if Galaga is a reach-around then Galaga '88 is a reach-around with an ear tickle. ;)

The only thing that sucks about 88 is the 8 way Atari logo joystick, which is why I have my board in a stripped ( soon to be decorated) Galaxian cabinet with a proper 2 way stick.

The red button version are unique but if you have the orange buttons they are pretty much sanwa buttons.

I show both in a video I recorded yesterday:
http://youtu.be/Rf824OdMtiw

I like that CP with the two tone leaf buttons look bad ass and ill be following your Mr Do revitalising &  btw cool videos...

I watched your G07 monitor repair video when you toss the board in the sink, honestly I thought you were crazy, I never thought of washing circuit boards like that, you proven to me its just fine to do so if you do it right...

I won't work in a unwashed chassis. You end up filthy and the first even can get in the solder.

I'm jonesing, waiting for updated Mr Do videos on your project....
I have been busy the last few weeks. but I will get back to it.

My opinion on this has changed.

I am a diehard for games in this genre. And I have a space invaders, Galaxian, Galaga, Gaplus, and Galaga '88 cabinet as well as a bunch of board of other games.

When I got into this hobby I was of the opinion that Galaga was the best and that Galaxian was boring. Galaga was the first game I got.

Then I got a Gaplus and realized how much deeper it is.

Then I got a Galaga '88 because I always wanted one.

Then I got a space invaders for free and then I found a beautiful Galaxian.

Now that I have all of them I can say I appreciate Galaxian more than Galaga, it is show in the beginning but it ramps up and requires precision.

Galaga isn't bad but it is much more of button masher, and I'm that sense Gaplus is better than Galaga.

Galaga '88 is a masterpiece that I adore to play, and Galaga arrangement is a downgrade even though it came out after 88.

Another great game in the series is Cosmo Gang the Video. Think Galaga meets paridus.

If I were to rank them it would be like this:

Galaxian
Galaga '88
Gaplus
Galaga
Space Invaders
Galaga Arrangement

I will leave out the rarer games like Cosmo, and SI '95, even though I love them.

I knew it wasn't Arkaniod and that you guys were wrong because of the Taito logo. That was a Space Invaders era Taito logo. Arkanoid came much later. Smiley
I wasn't saying I was arkanoid, it just made me think arkanoid. ;)
