Even though it is getting updated more often now, the smallest updates are still known to cause major issues. One small update will cause 100 games to stop working. Mouse support has been dead for me in it for a while now. Reported it to them and they were saying it was because I was using Windows 10 Technical Preview. They completely ignored where I mentioned also trying it with Windows 7/8/8.1 Update 1 (Windows 8.1 is where I first encountered it) on three seperate systems and also tried out 4 other mice (ps2/usb) to rule out as much as I could and still never got it to work. It sees the mouse and I can move the mouse in the menu and click, but works with zero games. I just gave up and stopped using it.

They really don't bother listening to many actual users unless it's a major issue that's affecting thousands or a higher-up dev personally finds it. I wasn't the only one having the mouse issue and I'm sure others still are. I know there was one dev who would confirm my issue, but it basically got smacked down by others as nothing.

Wow, I have not heard of that happening. I was just commenting on the people that worry about quality of emulation but are using versions of MAME that are 4+ years out of date. Maybe not anyone here, but I have seen that. I hope your issue is fixed soon

For 1980's->1990s. Curved CRTs are the best way to go.

I agree, I think it adds a certain element of physicality to the display and it's also more authentic to the time, but I understand why people don't care about that either. I also think maybe I'm alone about the physicality thing, but feel free to agree with me.

Scanlines in no way replicate the look of an actual CRT. On my LCD I have filter turned off, "unevenstretch" disabled on MAME and all my games are set to "Pixel Aspect" under Video Options. I think this is the best option if using an LCD monitor, because it only stretches the image by a whole number of pixels eliminating any weird upscaling artifacts and it isn't at all blurry from the filter setting. The disadvantage is that the output from some games (like CPS games) aren't even close to 4:3, but at least you're correctly seeing the video as the game sees it.

Scanlines are useful if you're using a large computer monitor that's right up to your face, because the image then is gonna be too blocky to even comprehend. This is why: https://www.shadertoy.com/view/XsjSzR#

And if you're going through the trouble of converting to/building a MAME cabinet, don't go LCD if at all possible, you're only cheating yourself...  Smiley

But what about the emulation itself? I've heard of some games not being able to perfectly emulate the gameplay on certain games. For example, I've read Robotron 2084 has limitations in Mame as the game gets very difficult quick. If you make it past Level 9 or 10 you've really achieved something.

I don't know why, but people don't really seem to care about updating to the latest version of MAME when a new one comes out. A new one comes out every month now.

Alcon, Wonderboy, Mad Planets and Quantum are all games I love! & a bunch here I definitely need to look into, I wasn't even aware they made a sequel to Pac-man, bizarre to say the least...

Here's an unreleased Gottlieb prototype that you kind of need MAME to play. It's like a mix between Tempest, Robotron and Mad Planets and it's really addicting.

"I always look for games that I want to play first, more often than not, the rare games kind of suck." -JOHN

I don't disagree...but more than anything else, operators' confidence a game would make money kind of dictated which games slipped through the cracks and which ones never made it far at all. Maybe Joust 2 is a bad example, but it's one of my favorite games.  Smiley
