1  Arcade and Pinball Discussions / General Arcade and Video Game Discussions / Re: Arcade Monitor vs TV on: October 10, 2017, 09:00:47 am
It's to do with the connection between the AES/MVS and the TV/Monitor.
The TV should be similar in quality to an arcade monitor although the quality of the components will vary between manufacturers. The problem is the if you are using a composite (yellow) cable to connect to the TV. Analogue video is made from three colours, Red, Green and Blue or RGB. The best quality would be getting an RGB signal from the console to the TV.

In an arcade machine, the arcade game pcb outputs an RGB on three separate wires. One for Red, one for Green and one for Blue. These three wires (plus the separate sync wires) are sent separately and connect to the arcade monitor directly so no drop in signal quality.
A composite signal has to send all three colours plus the sync signals along one wire meaning that you lose a lot of information and therefore quality.

S-Video is slightly better because it splits some of the composite signal into another wire but all colours still get sent on the same wire within the s-video cable.

What you want is a TV that accepts an RGB input. In the UK and the rest of Europe we had a connection called SCART which has pins that accept an RGB signal providing that you send the correct voltage along the scart cable. I've connected a PAC-MAN pcb to a SCART TV successfully and it looks great. I'm not sure how easy it is to get hold of SCART TV in the USA and Canada though. Alternatively old broadcast monitors usually accept an RGB signal.

Shot gunning the g07 could have fixed your issue. TherealBobRoberts.net sells a deluxe kit for the g07 which includes the caps, HOT, soldered fuses, fly back, and power transistors. Re -flowing all your pins and your sinc connections is always good practice. I have done a few g07's and just did my centipede the other day. The deluxe kit is the way to go.

To be honest, I'd pretty much given up on fixing the issue so caved in and sent it off for repair to one of the guys over on UKVAC.
He's now fixed it for me and said that one of the resistors in the sync circuit was open. He's also replaced all of the caps and cleaned the chassis which was filthy. So he's pretty much serviced the chassis and for a very reasonable price too. i'm looking forward to getting it back and into the Pole Position.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have a youtube channel called "That Tim Guy"? If so, I'm subscribed to the channel, the videos are great.
Anyway, regarding the harness, the way that I tested the board on a RGB scart TV was to use some small solid core wire connected to the scart cable and plugged directly into the wiring harness connector which in turn is connected to the board. So the harness is good as well.

So, I'm out of options. Well almost. I've sent the chassis off over to someone here in the UK who's pretty good with monitors and he should hopefully be able to fix it for a reasonable price.

I'll post a few videos ups on my channel soon once I get around to editing stuff. I also have a load of footage for the Pac-Man build. I think the Pole Position has been distracting me  Grin

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone can help me here.
I have an Electrohome G07 monitor (CBO chassis) in a Pole Position cab.
Its hooked up to a recently serviced Namco Pole Position board however the picture rolls vertically and will not lock however much I adjust the v hold pot. I've tried the following fixes on the chassis and I still can't stop the image rolling:

Sync header solder removed and re-added
X302 and X306 transistors (2sc1685) replaced (existing appeared to be good anyway)
IC501 (HA11244) socketed and replaced
V hold pot removed, tested and re-soldered
B+ adjusted to 120V

I've also hooked up the board to a RGB start tv and the picture is fine on that so the issue is definitely with the monitor.
Does anyone have any other ideas of what I can try?

A bit belated as I posted the new video a few weeks ago, but here goes:
A Pac-Man Is Born: Part 17. Fitting and wiring the Joystick and buttons - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLC8zOkLtlI

So time to fit the joystick to the control panel.
I started off by cutting a hole for the joystick to fit through and also some (crudely cut) notches for the switches to fit through.
I will have to come back to this a tidy this up at a later date, but for now it seems to work well:

Next I routed out the hole to a depth of 5mm. This is so the joystick will sit flush with the top of the control panel and allow the metal overlay to fit over the top:

Now to put the control panel back together along with the joystick. Looks alright  Grin: Although I forgot to fit the dust washer  Roll Eyes

So now the joystick is fitted, it was time to hook u the controls to the board. Firstly, I wired up the ground which is pretty easy when there are only 6 switches Cheesy.

Then the wires for each button:

When hooking the board up to the power, video and sound I made a little IO box. I also pre-wired a couple of DIN connectors, one for the controls and one for the coin and service switches.

So I mirrored the DIN connection at the control panel with the ground and other wires:

Then all I need to do was connect my own DIN cable between the IO box and the control panel, power up the cab and have a game of Ms. Pac-Man (I currently have the fast version of the ROMs):

Playing Pac-Man/Ms. Pac-Man with a leaf switch joystick is pretty fun and also very weird when you are so used to clicky microswitches.

Now that the control panel is pretty much done with the exception of paint etc, the next thing to tackle is the front panel and coin door.

Wow! That's super cool. NICE WORK!  Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked

Thanks John  Grin

I've been building this for a while now, so fingers crossed I can get this finished by the end of the summer and then move on to the next build...

Two new parts of my build are up on Youtube if anyone is interested:

A Pac-Man Is Born: Part 15. Control Panel clamps and button holes - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqJrkJvSzN0
A Pac-Man Is Born: Part 16. Creating the CP metal overlay  - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiLmJXFOM2U

I managed to get hold of some Control Panel clamps and fitted them. Seems to keep the control panel securely in place.

I also drilled the holes in the CP:

To make the metal overlay, I created a simple metal brake which I used to bend some custom 1mm sheet steel that I bought:

Then drilled the holes in the metal. This was quite tricky and I had to hammer the metal flat after the step bit caught on the metal.

But with the CP overlay on, no one will ever see the dents Grin:

Zoomed out pic:

Next up, on to the control panel wiring Smiley

I've finally started on the Control Panel for the cab! Video link if interested below:

A Pac-Man Is Born: Part 14. Making a start on the control panel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHhI1__scIg

After lots of measuring I managed to get the control panel cut to size and screwed together. I've got a photo bucket account now so I can upload pictures. Picture of the CP below:

I also managed to get hold of a NOS Pac-Man cabaret CP overlay!  Grin Picture below:

So far the cab is going to have:

Original PCB
Original Coin Door
Original Control Panel Overlay
Original Wico 4 way joystick

Next I'm going to fit the latches and drill the holes joystick and button holes.

This is only about an hour away from me by car. I might bribe the wife by saying that she can go to the Trafford centre as long I can go to the Arcade club  Grin

looking great....

i'm trying to decide what my next scratch build style will be.  cabaret for sure, but which one?   I'm going to put my black tiger board in it, so debating which cabaret style to build.

The midway one has good plans available...

Ian offered a cabaret that looks really good, i'll have to ask him again to see about plans...

Thanks dm73. Yeah, cabarets are great because if space is limited it means that you can fit more games in  Grin.
When you start your build, it would be great to see pics/videos of the build.

I had a quick look at gameplay of Black Tiger as I had not come across that game before. At fist I thought i looked similar to Ghosts and Goblins and then I realised that it was by Capcom which would explain why. Might have to have a go on that on my MAME machine.

Ok, I've made a bit more progress on the cab.
I've started to dismantle the tv and seperate the tube from the chassis and create
A frame and mounting point for each.

Looking pretty cool man. I can't wait to see the finished product.

Thanks mate.
Now things are warming up a bit in the garage I can make some more progress Cheesy

I have a new video up on the channel showing a few things added on to the cab as well as a package from eBay that will be attached to the cab at some point.
