My non-professional guess, you got voltage issues on the ram side of things. Had a buddy's do something similar. Had to send it to someone with a logic prob.

Simple green or similar, garden hose, air compressor, warm sunny day. I've done it a dozen times. It easy, fast and thurough. Have even done it in the dishwasher a time or 2. These are crappy old PCB's not Rembrandts'. Just grab your sack and do it!

I kinda agree with jow, though I would go the mame route. How much $$ is too much? All depends on you, your deep pockets and your time. Parts are becoming harder and harder to find which drives prices up. Decide today if you want a complete restore and then go find the parts. They wont be any cheaper or easier to find later. Otherwise make do with what you can or sell. Setting a goal/making a plan and sticking to it will help. And really whats the point in over worring about the $$? You'll never make a ton of money on these and you cant take any of it with ya in the end. Just go have fun with them! Can you put a price on the enjoyment?

It was some generic one. It's on a windows machine running XP. Did a little reading up on it and it seems that Mala has issues with pad hacks on occasion. Tried to get it to work but it's being a pain in the arse so I will just go with a key-wiz encoder on this build. Got several of them lying around.

What kind of front end do you plan on using? I just tried using a pad hack with Mala last night. She doesn't like it.

It would be kinda cool if you went "down the line" of your machines and mentioned anything special you could about them. ie: Where & when you got them, special meaning to you for each, technical issues you have had, maybe a quick story of a friend who played/enjoyed one, restore troubles/successes, still to do lists, hi-scores, if you plan to trade them out...  whatever! Then maybe at the end of the video give us an idea of some upcoming plans for next year, new machines your hunting for or restores on deck ect. Hell I don't care, I'll watch anything you put out!
