Ian, you're gonna start selling cap kits? Are you the new Bob Roberts? :)

How about specialty caps? Like some of the power caps on the chassis boards and Psu caps and transistors.
Just a suggestion.

Nothing wrong with becoming Bob Roberts
The only thing with specialty parts is getting enough to make the price worth while.  As time goes on I will probably add stuff like that as it would benefit me personally.

How about kits for Atari's AR boards? If there's one thing I've learnt they are very important and cause a lot of issues. The AR II boards have more stuff so it should be easy enough to make kits for all.

Here is what I compiled for my Asteroids Deluxe AR I board:

2 x 10uf 25v axial
3 x 470uf 25v  axial
1 x 1000uf 25v axial
2 x 3300uf 25v axial
1 x tip32
1 x 2n3055
1 x 1k ohm trimpot

I'm also going to change out the LM305 voltage regulator, it's getting hard to find though.

I'll take a look into the ar2 I have a few laying around. As for the lm305 you can use lm100 lm105 lm300 and lm305 but I was unable to find a drop in replacements using available chips.

This place carries whatever is not in a cap kit.

Yeah I have been using that resource and a few others. I think he was talking about having the parts for sale for the more special parts that you don't normally replace. I don't mind the suggestion but they are not that cheap and more risky to have in inventory. I might revisit that position after I get set up more. At the moment I am still doing documentation.

For the cap kits I am trying to highlight and label all the Caps in a picture to make finding them easier.

OKay dokey, I am putting in a test order for 10 kits. These are test kits because some of the 16v and 25v caps were bumped up to 50v and I am not 100% sure how they will fit, they should fit without issues since I did check the spacing and width but you can never be sure.

Price is $6 a kit and shipping is included.  Please PM me if you want one. The list of current support kits is above. If there is anything wrong with the kit I will refund your money if you can send me a picture of it!

What brand are they and what type of that brand ? Are they low ESR, 105 degr. ?

Caps are not just caps folks....at these prices I am suspecting cheap Chineses stuff....

Almost all of the caps are Kemet with few exceptions. The caps are all 105C. I can provide a few list of caps used, its just long. I am completely willing to change these caps to improve the quality if it is suspect.

Ian do you have a guestimate on when you'll be ready to ship?

As soon as the caps come in which should be i think thursday. Maybe Wednesday. The first set of instructions may not be the best but ill work on it.

From what I've seen so far I'm sure your instructions will be just fine.

Title: Re: $6-shipped cap kits
Post by: iankellogg on April 02, 2014, 07:07:36 am
Well wells gardners manuals are shitty and I am going to have to pull out my monitors and do cap kits myself and take pictures to make the instruction sheet. So the first pass might be really blurry and not all that useful, etherway the cap list will be there as well.

Title: Re: $6-shipped cap kits

Well where do you live? I might be able to accommodate you. More or less my price is $5 a kit + $1 shipping so if it costs $5 to ship it to you the kit would be $10. I can try to package more than one and save on shipping. It is only for the US where i am charging a flat $6 per kit.

I shipped yours out first thing today. Just been dumb and forgot to update paypal. I ordered more caps today since your orders wiped out all of my 1ufs.  Instructions are packed but unfinished with only cap list on the sheet.

Thank you Ian, sorry for depleting your stock LOL. No probs on the instructions, I'm just going to replace with the equivalent cap one at a time so should be painless.

They came packed up nicely and look to be great quality. Can't wait to install them.

I know the instructions aren't quite the best on the 4900,4600. I will be improving them shortly. Please let me know how the installation goes. I haven't had time to do any myself. I am really interested in how the caps are going to fit.

Title: Re: $6-shipped cap kits
Post by: jasonsmith on April 14, 2014, 01:14:02 pm
Ah the lists are good enough for me. Your 19V2000 instructions makes it easy to find the spots but really it's not that big of a deal. It's easy to spot a cap on the these boards. Also sometimes when the instructions are too good it make the task too simple and concentration is lost and screw ups happen at least with me anyway. Plus we all have access to the manual with the same layout drawings. I'll be doing the 4600 first as that machine is totally in the way at the moment and gotta get it done. I'm curious how it's all going to fit as well, I'll report back next week when I get some time to work on it.

Title: Re: $6-shipped cap kits
Post by: iankellogg on April 14, 2014, 01:16:44 pm
As soon as time permits i am going to redo all the instructions with assembly drawings that list the cap instead of just highlighting them.

I can see people trying to blame you for putting a cap in wrong spot. Letting them find it from the list may be safer and less work for you.

That's a hot idea if you can make it work and get it printed somehow.

Post by: iankellogg on April 16, 2014, 10:19:08 pm
I can get labels printed easily, Cost is probably a few cents extra per kit. Packaging time is about the same interestingly enough. As for mistakes. You should ALWAYS verify the cap you are replacing even if you are picking it out of the bag, you should verify it with the cap you just removed. Instructions can always be wrong.

I'm about to slowly cap my Centipede K4600. Took it out and apart today, what a mess of a chassis compared to a GO7 or something.

Title: Re: $6-shipped cap kits
Post by: iankellogg on April 23, 2014, 08:07:09 am
Okay so here is the deal now that I got everything figured out. I provide full (or near full) cap kits, with the exception of the input filter cap which almost never needs to be replaced. The kits are $6/shipped if you PM me through john's forum here. Some kits contain a lot more cabs than others and will be $1 or $2 more, I'll start posting up prices in the main thread soon. I'll start putting up a for sale thread on klov and the price will be $1 more across the board, so contact me here. If you need any parts from digikey let me know, I am ordering almost weekly now.

Okay Ian looks like I found something else I could use...

Can you build me a rebuild kit for my Stargate Power Supply?
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/85675826/StargatePWRS.pdf

There's about 9 caps, 2 of which are kinda big so I understand they won't be cheap. I can order them through digikey but figured I'd try you first. Also there's a couple transistors that would be useful as well.

I'm getting reboots from time to time and I've heard that rebuilding the PS may fix it. The caps look original anyway  ::)

No biggie if it's not worth your time, not sure how popular the kit would be.

ian's cap kit is the best.  i have gotten other cap kits and they give you all teh caps in a bag.  i have spent more time putting caps in order that actually putting in the caps.  with the label system it is quick and easy.

i was looking, I think i have all of those caps except for that massive 18,000uf axial. you most likely dont want to pay for one of those new, they are about $30+ and I doubt it is bad. Even if that went out of spec I dont think it would do much. As for the transistors I am currently looking for those.

I found a 18,000 snap in radial model for only $5 bucks. It looks like an axial on the drawing but I think it calls for a radial in the list. I'd like to change it, don't care if I need to run a wire around or solder or whatever since it's held down by a zap strap anyway.

Don't make a special order for me though, I can get it whenever I order something next. It won't do you any good to have those on hand.

do you want me to try to find replacement IC's as well. I think they are still around. I am just trying to source stuff tonight and hopefully place an order late tonight or tomorrow

Title: Re: $6-shipped cap kits
Post by: jasonsmith on May 21, 2014, 06:07:41 pm
You're the electrical pro here my friend. If you think that the IC's or voltage regulators or whatever could benefit from a change I'm good with that. When it comes to a power supply I'd lean more towards the bullet proof side than not. But you gotta think about yourself here as well, I don't want you to buy a bunch of stuff that only I'm going to want, that would be wasteful for your wallet.

Title: Re: $6-shipped cap kits

Normally I dont replace anything that isn't broke. But you are thinking about doing a shotgun repair so I figured I would try to source everything I could.

Title: Re: $6-shipped cap kits
Post by: jasonsmith on May 21, 2014, 06:12:35 pm
Ya, I'm about to change out the ribbon cables and they might actually fix the issue but... I'd like to replace for future longevity. There's no way those old caps are gonna hold out and if they're messing with my voltage in the least I want them gone.

Title: Re: $6-shipped cap kits
Post by: jasonsmith on May 21, 2014, 06:13:46 pm
Also when I look at the newest revision of all these IC's they same to have so much stronger and faster specs, can't hurt if I don't screw up the install.

A little late but I wanted to thank you Ian. The parts showed up last week and they look great. I like how you've got them all lined up for easy identification. Just need to find some time now to install all the bits.

Its about even split between Kemet and Nichicons. They are all 105C caps with a minimum of 2k hours at temp.  I have considered bumping them up in hours but that would cost a fair amount more. also that picture is pretty old, I have changed the packing of the caps to be in tape strips. which apparently i have no photos of.  Lastly The prices had to be moved up to $8 for most kits, I added in more caps and bumped the ratings on stuff.

Never heard about Kermet before but the site looks like they know what they're doing.Nichicon's.....well Atari used them all the time, and I have yet to find a bad one on f.i. AR-II's, awesome quality !

Great quality for a great price !

If you accept PayPal and ship at reasonalbe costs (USPS) to Europe I think I'll have to order some :):)

Oh I see you don't have the 6100 listed and the Amplifone. I'm not in need for Amplifone right now but do need two 6100 kits.
