Title: How to best drill a lock?
Post by: LockeCole on January 05, 2017, 09:47:31 pm
I picked up a handful of cabinets but a couple don't have keys or open doors. I'm looking for suggestions for how to drill a lock. Specifically, what kind of bit and if any drill will do or if something specific is required/recommended. Any tips would be appreciated.  :)

Any bit that can drill metal is fine. Just drill where you would put the key. If it doesn't open then try a slightly bigger bit. The goal is to drill out the pins in the lock tumbler.

Make sure you have decent bits. I've broken tons of cheap-o Harbor Freight bits in coin locks. Start small and work up the size until it's free.

It's not hard at all. Check out my R-type video. I drill a lock in that vid.

I start with regular metal bits and then when the hole is started i switch to masonry bits. They are tougher.

Thanks P-feif, mrdude, John and Homey244 for all the suggestions. Really looking forward to getting into these machines and using all the stuff I've learned from John's videos.  ;D
