Title: Pac-Man PCB quality "A" vs. "B"
Post by: Bach730 on May 11, 2014, 03:15:42 pm
I just picked up a Pac Man upright this weekend. It's in great shape but isn't working. Looks like the manual references both types of boards for schematics, wiring, etc. Is there a relatively easy way to tell if your pcb is "A" or "B" quality?

as far as I can tell from research it has to do with the custom IC's. Does your board have daughter boards. if so its a B.

Basically, NAMCO made a custom chip for the Pac-Man board to prevent piracy, etc. And, well, I think Bally ran out of them and reverse engineered it and replaced it with all those parts on the daughterboard.

I am not sure if that makes it an A or B though. The board itself is technically the same, it's just that one chip.

Thanks! I'm probably going to have it tested at least. It has 2 daughter boards.

John, do you have a reputable person who tests and repairs pcb's at a reasonable price?

I don't. You can try Adam here but he is always booked up:

I do boards cheap. At the moment I only ask for shipping to be paid. As far as I know Adam is no longer taking repairs.

One because it's john's forum and I give deals to people here and two because I'm still a nobody in the repair world. As far as pac man is concerned I can just trade you my spare working board and keep your broken one.

That's cool. Well, I don't know if mine is broken yet. I need to replace fuses, check the power supply, then make sure there are no unwired parts. This thing sat in a garage for 15 years.

It'll be a couple of weeks before I can get to it, but I'll contact you as soon as I've eliminated the other possibilities.

I've been able to get the anti stactic packing at UPS or any other shipping store for that matter.
