Title: I picked up a Neo Geo 4 slot with a sound problem
Post by: Ballz on January 28, 2016, 12:34:01 am
I picked up a Neo Geo - 4 slot the other day with 4 games and a 111-1. It's in good condition with a perfect monitor. The only problem is the sound during gameplay has static and screeching over the sounds of the game. The Neo Geo intro screen sounds perfect. I cleaned the slots with contact cleaner and a toothbrush and I cleaned the games, same problem. I ordered a cap kit from Ian today, besides that is there anything else that would cause that problem?

Start with the cap kit. THat is most of the failures for a neogeo. Other than cleaning the volume sliders.

I did not clean the volume sliders yet, I will try that as well. Yeah those caps are packed in there pretty tight on the PCB!!

the caps being close together isnt even the worst part. A lot of them are soldered to the ground plane and I think with lead free solder. It took me quite a while and a lot of hassle to desolder them.

Do you have any other tips? Do you know of any vids or websites that show someone capping one of these?
John you should do a video on it.

Instead of desoldering the caps. Fill more solder into each hole and try to make your iron touch both leads of the cap at the same time and pull the cap out. Then clean the hole. Trying to use your solder sucker is going to do more damage to this board.

Pro Tip...thanks

I have done plenty of monitors, but I have not worked on a Neo Geo PCB.

Thanks for your help Ian, your cap kit worked in solving my audio problem. It sounds great now! Some of the caps had been replaced by someone else, but they put smaller caps than required. I am sure that contributed to the problem. You weren't kidding, they were a pain in the ass to change out. Your Cap Kits are top notch! I appreciate how you organize them with labels, it makes it easier to identify the one you need.

Glad to hear it is working now. Hopefully the soldering tip helped out. The neogeo is probably the hardest board to cap i have done to date.

Awesome!

I love success story's, its even better to see the vendor provide tech support and the issue solved.

You guys are true motivators!
