31  Arcade and Pinball Discussions / General Arcade and Video Game Discussions / Just got a Gyruss today! on: October 18, 2014, 11:36:37 pm
Hey everyone,

I just picked up a Gyruss at a garage sale today for $100.  It needs a little work - here's some pics I took when I got it home in the garage:

Right now, it won't boot consistently.  As you can see from the pics, I got it to go to the title screen - the sound works, the screen is pretty good, but it won't show the actual gameplay!  It shows the score and remaining lives, but the ship, enemies, and "bullets" don't show.  When it doesn't boot properly, it shows garbled stuff or it shows the test grid, but improperly (as seen in the last pic).

They didn't have keys, so I'll have to drill the locks out or try picking them.

The side art isn't horrible - it is a little worn and there's a spot where someone scratched their name into the right side.  I'll probably keep the artwork as-is.  I have some bondo work ahead of me, though - there are holes in the front from where there was a security bar installed at one point and there's a considerable amount of wood missing on the left under a section of the t-molding.  That's going to be interesting to try to fix - especially with trying to preserve the side art on that side.

Reminds me of a joke...

What's brown and smells like blue paint?

My wife and I used to collect Budweiser stuff (and we used to have a dog named Buddy) - so if I had Tapper, it would have to be the Budweiser one...
34  Arcade and Pinball Discussions / General Arcade and Video Game Discussions / Anyone attend Zapcon in Phoenix, AZ this past April? on: August 29, 2014, 05:21:53 pm
Just curious if anyone here has attended Zapcon (http://zapcon.com/) in Phoenix, AZ?

I went to this past one in April and it was really good.  Great collection of games all brought in by private owners.  They had Pinball (both modern and older "EM" types) as well as "normal" video games.

I'll definitely be going to the next one when they announce it.

Hey everyone,

I've been watching John's videos for quite a while now and finally decided to pop in on the forum.

I've actually been wanting to get an arcade cabinet for quite a while now.  I have a Williams Comet pin and a slot machine, but I really need to get me an arcade cabinet or two.  Unfortunately, AZ seems to be pretty barren of available arcade cabinets at the moment.

If I had my way, I'd try to get my hands on:
Tron
Tapper
Street Fighter II Champion Edition
Mortal Kombat 2

Although, Sf2 and MK2 I could be satisfied playing via MAME.

I have a Williams Comet.  I've had it since about 1986.  I need to rebuild the right flipper.  I should probably get a new ball and replace the rubber at this point, too...
