Title: Gyruss Restore
Post by: Viper155 on April 01, 2016, 01:10:04 pm
I just got a gyruss and the side art has been painted over with black paint.  It is my understanding that the original side art was painted on so obviously I can't use paint stripper however it seems like maybe it was painted over with latex paint because I found a small spot that seems to be falling off. Is my thought possible, and can latex paint be removed without damaging the original paint below?

After further investigation I don't believe it can be latex because it's not rubbery and doesn't peal off.  It's like a hard shell that chips off.  I can use my nail but it still lifts some of the original paint.  Any suggestions ?

First attempt was with lift off but that wasn't strong enough to remove the thick black paint.  Goo off works great if removed at the perfect time as to not mess up the painted on art however getting that perfect timing is impossible.  I'll probably need to do stencils but it's still cool to see the original artwork appear even though it's in rough shape.

Removing paint is really really really hard. Most people don't even bother and just sand back to wood and repaint.

Close to saving it but not close enough. I'm going to try citristrip on the other side, hoping that it eats it all a lot faster.

That's not that bad honestly. I wonder if you could get a little closer with a light abrasive

Like a magic eraser?

When I bought gyruss it came with brand new stencils so it's tempting to redo it but I've also read gyrus is a pain to do.

The citristrip worked way faster but the same results.  I wasn't expecting to find vinyl under all the paint, I thought it would strip down to bare wood..

If yall are interested in this restore, you can check out the album here.  I've restored almost everything including painting on side art with a stencil.  Im aware that the colors are not perfect but im okay with that.
