Just in case you didn't know about these more recent Atari accessories:

Homemade Atari EPROM cart:

Atari Ethernet Cartridge:
http://www.atari8ethernet.com/Pictures.html

Atari 800 Cf Cart (plus ram upgrade)

SD card floppy drive:

Video of it in action
Sio2SD - Atari 8bit Floppy drive mod: http://youtu.be/fW7l-fxJxVc

Ram upgrades:

Atari video cable (800xl doesn't have Chroma connected requiring a sine soldering)
http://m.ebay.com/itm?itemId=231154326374

This one has a svideo connector if you are using a TV over a commodore monitor with the separate luma and chroma rca connectors

Here is a document for upgrading the video output to best quality:
http://www.atari8.co.uk/downloads/UltraVideo%20XL%201.0.pdf

This one doesn't disable RF and composite:
http://atariage.com/forums/topic/178089-kjmann-s-video-upgrade/?hl=%20kjmann%20%20s

And you can always buy another one of these as long as your dad won't take this one too.

Cool, thanks! I already ordered a new video cable. The one that plugs into the video port not the RF port.

And... I ordered a XM301 modem. I'm gonna try to get my 800XL back online! My Dad can't stop me now!!!!!

Yeah, is it the just composite video version, or the composite+ svideo (luma/chroma) version? Just remember that on the xl Atari neglected to connect the chroma pin inside the system.

Did you try your current RF setup with your neon signs off? I have a suspicion that they might be causing the interference you are seeing.

I was always a commodore guy. C64, C128, Amiga..

there are some great stuff for these old machines now. I'm building a new PSU for my C64 that can power two c64s, two drives and allow switching of drives between machines and stuff. no more 1 power brick for everything.

That is pretty awesome!

John, please do a Montezuma's Revenge video! That was my favorite game back then!

How much would all the stuff cost to get an 800XL with 5 or 10 games?

I don't think much at all. You can get a flash cart for like $40 that can hold a ton of games.
