16  Tech and Marketplace / I need help with my game! - Technical Discussion / Re: Space Invaders power supply on: March 26, 2018, 09:13:35 pm
Talked with Arcade Shop today. I felt that this thing must have a short on the PCB. There is one sound missing (thump thump sound) and the flying saucer sound is really weak. The guy I talked to at Arcade Shop felt that one or both of those chip is most likely shorted to ground and at the very least I should investigate that. I was sort of getting that feeling too, but really wasn't sure until I talked to this guy. So hopefully sometime soon, I'm going to pull those two chips and see how the board runs without them. It won't have those sounds but it should (hopefully) at least run. I'll let you know what happens after I get a chance to work on it.

So I needed to change the wire harness connector for the pcb because I knew it was not in the greatest shape. Was really hoping that it would solve the problem. Nope. Brand new power supply goes into shut down  with the pcb hooked up. I’m at a total loss. I would really appreciate if some of you gurus would reply. I’m going to call arcade shop sometime this week but I’m really lost on this problem and could use some friendly advice.

Decided to give up on the original power supply. I bought a brand new switching power supply with the 8080 adapter from The Arcade Shop. Just installed it set 5 volts with the processor disconnected, turned the game off, plugged in the processor and turned the game on. The new power supply turns on for a few seconds and then goes into shut down. I shut the game off confirmed my connections and turned it on again. Same problem power supply comes on for a few seconds and then goes into shutdown. Something on the processor board has got to have a short.

Any ideas would be appreciated.......

Yeah I remember John talking about what they are in a past video. They are just normal light switches with a fancy cover that makes them look like high powered breakers. Very similar to the link posted above.

A. We were all waiting for Luke to strut his stuff and really show us his Jedi skills. He never did. Disappointing.

B. When Ben Kenobi died he got hit with a light saber. When Yoda died he was very old and died of old age. When Qui Gon died he was stabbed with a light saber. When Mace Windu died he got thrown out of a window a few miles up from the ground. When the emperor died Vader through him into the Death Stars power core. When Vader died he got the hell beat out of him by Luke. When Luke died he..... he..... he.... He What?!?!?!?! Just faded away for no damn good reason!!!! Really??? Disappointing.

C. We were all waiting to see Snoke strut his stuff and really show us his Sith skills. He never did.  Disappointing.

D. We were all waiting to see if Leia has any Jedi skills. She ended up flying through space...... Even a Jedi would die in the vacuum of space. Disappointing.

E. Poe pulled Huxes leg..... No one in the Empire/First Order would even fall for it or tolerate it. They would shoot way before Poe made his call to Hux. Yeah right... Disappointing.

F. No one has ever made an inter galactic "Force" phone call before. What the heck was that? Disappointing.

G. The Disney influence it way to obvious, and they are forgetting about what Lucas was doing. Will I go see the next one. Yep. Disappointing.

I could go on................
22  Arcade and Pinball Discussions / General Arcade and Video Game Discussions / Arcade game license on: December 10, 2017, 06:03:09 pm
I’m curious to find out what kind of licensing is needed to put arcade games on location in the area’s that you guys live in.

I recently found a game that was in good shape, most likely needs a power supply to get it working and cheap enough that I thought maybe I could put in on location and it could possibly be the start of a small business. You know buy one game let it earn some money then use the money to buy a second game and let it earn some money, and then a third game and then a forth, and so on, until I had enough to possibly open a classic arcade. A buddy of mine and I have been tossing the idea around for a while. However we ran into a small problem. The city that I live in requires a license to operate arcade games. The license is $750 to operate the games, plus $250 to distribute the games, plus a $59 business license registration, all of which have to be renewed annually. The last time I checked that’s a whole lot of games at $0.25 each to pay for all that. I’ve also found that most of the local cities around me are similar, except one that is $75 for the license, plus $50 per game added to the license, up to 4 games and then you need another license. For all of the cities you have to list who owns the establishment, who owns the game, the address where the game will be operated and provide a drawing of the building where the game will be located inside the building, plus some of the cities require an electrical permit be pulled and then the game must be inspected by the electrical inspector. And if I move a game, replace a game, add a game, remove a game I have to notify them immediately.  And they fine you fairly heavily if you don't follow the rules on this stuff. None of this includes setting up an actual business license with the State or getting a tax I.D. number or insurance (which some of the cities require prove of insurance too). Seems like my local governments are set up for people with lots of money to start a business and not the little guy trying to start something on a shoe string budget. Anyone of you running into stuff like this? I’d love to know what John and Jay (it is Jay isn’t it?) are doing to set up those game in the three bars that they’ve put them in?Huh??

Wow I can't believe I haven't worked on this thing in that long. Any rate I finally found time to putts with it..............

MONTHS ago I bought the transistors that I listed above, along with some others and decided to check them, however before I put them in I had watched a youtube video where someone having the same issue as me found the big ceramic resistor (.18 ohm 5 watt) was bad he changed it and his problem was fixed. I looked at the print and saw that it "could" be an issue so I pulled it out of circuit and low and behold it was WAAAAY out of spec. So I ordered a new one and changed it. DID NOT FIX ANYTHING. So this morning I changed all the transistors that I had purchased for it. Did not have time to turn it on and see what it does and I didn't have time to use my meter to test the transistors either so I'm not sure that it's fixed. If it's not, after looking at the print there are a bunch of resistors that are sort of in the middle of the +5 and -5 volt circuits and could effect them both so I'll start pulling them out of circuit and testing them, along with some of the diodes (there are too really big diodes that the board under them looks burned, Hmmmmm?). There isn't a lot more to look at here. I'm even starting to wonder if the transformer is making enough voltage for the power supply to work so I'm probably going to check that too. I honestly can't believe that I don't have it fixed yet.

Here's a link to Adam's youtube channel "Onecircuit". Watch some of the Punchout and repair video's. That'll at least give you an idea on how to trouble shoot this thing. He also has some videos on basic troubleshooting. I'll be honest. I haven't had the opportunity to try any of it myself.

Any chance the red green and blue wires are tied together or somewhere in the chassis shorted together?

Doesn't have to be in your area. Do an internet search for people that can repair it and ship it wherever you have to. I think Ian Kellog does some PCB repair but don't take my word for it. Send him a PM or go on his sight and send him an e-mail to see what he says.

Worst he can do is say no....

I can't believe that I'm going to possibly identify this cabinet instead of the MASTER JOHN himself.

Here's the cabinet identity chart on this forum. Look at the Bally/Midway picture, 3rd row from the top, second cabinet from the RIGHT side. Satan's Hollow. Is that it?

http://www.johnsarcade.com/forum/index.php?topic=2116.0

Is it?! The bezel angle was throwing my off. It's wrong.

Well it is kind of tough to really know being that the chart is only silhouette's. Call it my best guess.  ;)

Think it could be a Satan's Hollow cabinet that has been modified?Huh?? Maybe it had some sort of damage and they cut it off??
