3  Tech and Marketplace / I need help with my game! - Technical Discussion / Re: Moon Patrol Issue on: January 07, 2016, 01:20:33 am
Hello All,

I've purchased a Moon Patrol that worked properly when I bought it.  I trucked it standing up from the seller to my house and carted it in.  Since then, it plays, but the player cannot be killed.  The usual ways to die are by saucers that bomb the players vehicle, or you can fall into craters or drive into rocks.  However, the buggy can take all the bombs and rocks that the game can dish out, and the buggy just continues driving over the craters like they're not even there.

I've checked all ribbon cables for proper seating and pushed on all the chips that look like they could have wiggled out of sockets.  Most chips are soldered on the boards, so there aren't too many that could have wiggled out of sockets.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

On a high note, I had a Frogger that was having issues and I successfully diagnosed that a power supply replacement was required and it's now working great.  Yea!!

Thanks all,

 ~ Arcade Jedi

This is symptomatic of inadequate power to the PCB.  I'm betting your Moon Patrol has the same/similar problem as your Frogger.  Meter the +5V rail.  I bet it's low, like 4.5-4.7V.  If so, adjust it up to 5.05V and see if the problem goes away.  I wouldn't go higher than 5.1V or so.  Also, examine the edge connector pins for signs of damage, like burn marks and/or previous repair like solder on the traces.  You could have a bad connection that is not providing steady voltage to the board.

Sinistar.  It uses a 49-way joystick with a centering spider.  Not gonna play all that well with an X-Arcade that has 8-way sticks.

Pretty much every game from the late '80s forward that has an ending and allows continues is pretty shitty for collectors in a home environment.  No long-term replay value.  It would be better if you could disable continues with dip switch settings.  Otherwise, pretty much all side-scroller beat 'em ups are useless, IMO.  They did what they were designed to do: steal as many quarters from you in the arcade as possible.  They were shitty then and they're shitty now.

I misread this as "from vagina"  Lol.

My favorite Andrew Dice Clay joke:

"Where are you from?"

"My dad's penis, originally."

Just joined after seeing John's video on recapping a Sanyo 20EZ.  Pretty good timing since I just got my hands on my first cabinet -- a old Mario Bros machine.  A coworker of mine used to own it (and it worked then) but now it keeps blowing fuses on the monitor pcb.  So the timing for the video is pretty good and will hopefully help guide me through my first attempt at a cap kit as I try to make the Mario machine functional again.

Did somebody say Washington state?

I am used to long podcasts and long YouTube videos thanks to John!

You should try Retrogaming Roundup.  Each episode is six hours, on average.  Some have been over seven.

Same question was asked on KLOV recently:

Hope that helps.  I'm gonna have to do the same with my Black Widow soon.

Hah! Love your price guide... Not that it's a bible, but nothing else exists in THE WORLD concerning the price of the arcade games...

The Encyclopedia of Arcade Video Games (Schiffer Book for Collectors) Hardcover – August 30, 2003
http://www.amazon.com/Encyclopedia-Arcade-Video-Schiffer-Collectors/dp/0764319256

The pricing data is out-of-date, but then again, so is eXidy's.  ;)

I think this is an awesome coffee table book, though, and well worth the purchase price for collectors simply to have a nice hardcover with color photos of tons of golden era games, including many that are quite rare today.  Amazon reviewers bitched about the photo quality but most of the photos are perfectly acceptable quality.  Even by the early 2000s many of the games covered were pretty rare.

Besides, it's funny to read the estimated game values from 12 years ago.  I'll take a Super Punch-Out!! for $150 any day.  Grin  To be fair, eXidy's price guide isn't as out-of-date as this book, but it could use some updating.  Actual sale prices aren't always easy to get, though, so I'm sympathetic.

Any NES game worth its salt is tough.

Kid Icarus isn't exactly easy but I don't remember it being impossibly hard like many other great titles.  It's also kid friendly.
